Relevé, 2022 was a temporary art installation presented at Chatsworth House during the summer of 2022 as part of the Radical Horizons exhibition. Constructed almost entirely from repurposed materials sourced directly from the property, the work was conceived to ritualistically burn at the close of the event. On October 1, 2022, I joined eighteen women in executing the final ignition.
Inspired by an ancient legend connected to the Bronze Age archaeological site known as the Nine Ladies Stone Circle in the Peak District — where nine women were said to have been turned to stone for dancing on the Sabbath — Relevé examined the historical use of folklore as a tool of female suppression while reclaiming ritual, collective action, and feminine power.
What remains of Relevé are the surviving manzanita sculptures, mixed-media works, and its video and photographic documentation.
